The sexiest thing ever for women

When was the last time you took a deep satisfying breath and thought “my life is so balanced”?

“I am so even-keeled.”

“I feel so stable.”

If you’re anything like me, it might’ve been a while!

That is because balance is not that sexy.

Working hard to create a sense of regularity and rhythm works against the idea of excitement.

Or maybe you lean the other way – your life is so planned and orderly that there is no room for spontaneous fun or pleasure.

Either way, balance is often the overlooked bedrock of well-being.

The idea that we can be it all and have it all (all at once) has long plagued women and the truth is, we can’t. Have you ever pushed yourself to achieve something in one area only to find that another area has fallen down?

Balance.

One of the tools I use when I am coaching is a wellbeing audit. We check each key area of life from career to relationships to health and we gauge how satisfied they are with each. Usually what is revealed is lopsidedness that results in pain because some areas are not getting the focus they need.

That’s because we can’t do it all. Meet everyone else’s needs, hold everything together and look after ourselves.

This is where change needs to happen. It takes a readjustment of the dynamics of family and society so that women aren’t continually neglecting themselves to keep everything afloat.

For women to rise, it is not a solo act. It takes a village. And unfortunately, the way we live our lives in this day and age means that we don’t always have the support systems in place.

I call it scaffolding – Inviting people into your life who can help you thrive. It might be a trainer, a babysitter, an assistant, a coach. These are the crucial people who will lift you up and help you function at a higher capacity than you otherwise could.

Just like the African proverb says, “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”.

We need people to help us and we also need to let other people know what we can and cannot handle. These are known as boundaries. If we want to thrive, we need to set parameters about:

  • How much time or money we spend on certain things;
  • Who has access to us and when;
  • The level of intimacy we are willing to share with people; and
  • What we need emotionally in order to experience peace.

If you are struggling and you are looking at other women thinking “how does she do it?” I guarantee you that she has invested time, energy, and money in creating scaffolding and boundaries.
